Boston City Hall

Why is it that some people find the monumental elegance and dignity of Boston City Hall so over-whelming that it is threatening? Could the real problem be that you are so afraid of the clarity and boldness of the buildings structural systems and the tremendous unfolding of a variety of spaces . . . that such an over-whelming spatial experience frightens you?”

I don’t so much find the building itself overwhelming. Rather the baren feeling of the brick plaza really turns me off. I wish there were a lot more trees and plants around. This would feel much more welcoming to me as a pedestrian. After all it’s a heavily built up urban landscape that can use all the greenery it can get.
